What Price Life?

I wonder how much Murphy is worth?

I mean not to me but in the marketplace.

Kim Kardashian gets $10,000 for every tweet she twitters. Two of those would get us to the breakeven point in Murphy's care. The cast of jersey shores make seven figures for acting like frat boys who honestly deserve a beat down.

Is this what we value in our society?

You have no idea how hard it's been for me trying to reconcile the generosity and goodness of the people we met on the road with the inanity, insanity & absolute dissolution of decency I've seen since.

That's why I haven't asked for any more money for Murphy's care. And won't. I want no part of this travesty.

I'll flay myself first and to the bone before I accept this is the best we can do.

I feel the same about the money professional athletes and celebrities make. It's truly sick what our society values and reimburses.

Point well taken. But there are also things beyond our control or ability to influence that are not worth wasting your mental energy over. Opinion, yes. Argue for sanity vs. insanity, yes. Let the insanity of TV or celebrity wear on your psyche....NO. Respect your character decision to "go it alone", but do not presume that to do otherwise drops you into the category of those others. Details matter. Character matters. Motive and merit matter. And results will likely never be fair...but we soldier on. Good luck with the family and make the best decisions you can. You can do nothing more...or less.

On almost a daily basis, I have said "this world is going to hell in a handbasket" I keep wondering what on earth is wrong with people that they have so lost their human values. I wish I had answers that made sense, but more than that, I wish I could change it. The only one I can change is me and I will leave the rest in God's hands.

Understood. But don't let those deter you from the goodness and decency others have and willingly exhibit. Maybe by denying those who can help the ability to help, we're promoting the indecency that we see around us? If we act on decency, maybe it will be contagious. If there are those who want to assist, let's go for it, and post it, and blog it - and maybe it will touch others who will then want to assist? You remember that old commercial (I think it was for shampoo) - I told 2 people, then they told 2 people, then they told 2 people, and so on and so on and so on? Hmmmm - maybe just maybe we can turn this world around - one little step at a time.

Loving, the deepest kind of loving, will cost one everything. Tennyson said, 'Tis better to have loved and lost/ Than never to have loved at all." Really? Tell that to Jesus. See what it got him. If we say that to you, what do you have to say to us? That there is a crucifixion of your heart? A sacrifice? Yes. That is the mystery of love...and we are a world of people who prefer answers to questions, clarity to fog, black and white to gray. But there is something about wandering in the wake of love that is of worth too...and it is the reshaping of our very souls for we find that this deepest kind of love leaves the deepest wounds from which we never fully heal, rather are left gaping and enlarged...and able to bear more and endure more and love more. And that is the point, and it is, as Rilke said, a treasure, riches, on the darkness. It may not get you $20,000 to Tweet about, but the story of it, the legacy of love that would give life for life, endures.

Luke, I lost my Heidi last 3/18/2010 to congestive heart failure. It wasn't cheap but at the end of those final two years that I was blessed to have her, I would not have changed a thing. Praying for you and sending healing hugs!

New York Times report today says EPA puts value of a human life at $9.1 million, up from $6.8 million during the Bush Administration; while the Food & Drug Administration now puts value of a human life at $7.9 million, up from $5 million last year. Transportation Department used to value a life at $6 million. We live in strange times.
